The type of transmission used for MWD equipment is one of the most important decisions an operator must make. Two main types exist; mud pulse (MP) and electromagnectic (EM) telemetry. While EM is lauded for its efficiency; signal loss due to resistive formations and deeper wells can lead to transmission issues. On the other hand, mud pulse is reliable even at depth but will not work in foam or air drilling applications.

This is where Parallel Telemetry comes in. Utilizing both EM and MP simultaneous ensures maximum efficiency and reliability. Parallel Telemetry removes the need to trip out of the hole to change equipment. With both technologies working independently, the operator can keep drilling regardless of depth, formation resistivity or mud type.
